Biographical Note
Edinburgh-born Viv was raised in Zimbabwe, and it is there during the war of independence that her journalism career took off. After completing her training through the then Argus Africa News Service programme, she spent many years working in mainstream newspapers in Zimbabwe and South Africa, and more recently, in New Zealand. Coverage included the war, politics and economics, trade, travel and more. In the aftermath of Zimbabwe's independence in 1980, she travelled to the then Yugoslavia to cover the economic, political and trade links being forged between the two countries, and later undertook assignments in other European countries. She has also run the newsdesk on several newspapers.A lengthy foray into the field of freelancing saw her running her own operation, both in Zimbabwe and South Africa, providing copy for a wide range of local, national and international publications across a range of topics.
At one stage, she ventured into the human resources and public relations fields, and while still in Zimbabwe, did some scriptwriting for television documentaries.
Immediately prior to coming to New Zealand in mid-1999, Viv headed the regional bureau for a large South African daily newspaper, providing news and feature copy and photographs, as well as training and managing a team of journalists.Soon after arriving in New Zealand, Viv joined the Manawatu Standard Limited, first as a senior journalist in the newsroom, and then as editor of The Tribune, a 42,700 circulation community newspaper. She headed the newspaper from mid-2000 to March 2006, steering it through an extensive expansion programme across the central and lower North Island of New Zealand.
She has done countless show, concert and film reviews, and is still doing book reviews for publication.
