Biographical Note

With 14 years experience in the media bizzo I am a copywriter, freelance writer and communications consultant.

I've worked across pretty much all media, including print, web, TV and radio as a journalist and producer, production manager and director. In New Zealand I've worked for Radio New Zealand, Newstalk ZB and TV3, while on my requisite OE I worked for BBC World TV and Reuters TV in London.

Home again, and now with a family, for the past five years I've been working primarily in communications and copywriting, accented by freelance writing when I find a great story and have the chance to tell it. While I have published some stories under my own byline, I've written dozens under the name of others or with no byline - particularly for industry magazines.

I love writing about people and their ideas, but I also love simplifying messages and explaining concepts. I have supplied copy for countless social marketing projects and other public education campaigns, writing editorials, advertorials, articles, media releases, brochures, web content and TV scripts.

I have just finished writing a book about child abuse (to be launched at Parliament in August), which was commissioned by The Institute of Child Studies. The book was written using the words and experiences of 24 child abuse survivors, who I interviewed for their thoughts and feelings. Many of them had never before spoken of what had happened to them - it was a humbling, sometimes draining but ultimately personally fulfilling experience. The people I met while undertaking this project were truly incredible.

With one book under my belt, I'm eager to do another one - particularly a biography. Again, I love telling people's stories. I'm also very keen to get a bit more creative and try my hand at advertising copy and more persuasive wordsmithing. Always looking for that new string to my bow!

Despite not hailing from a farm, I seem to have written an awful lot about the primary sector, particularly agriculture and forestry. I can name more varieties of grass than most normal people know exist.... I'm counting that as a positive.

As for what my passions are - that would have to be food and cooking. But my sphere of knowledge is much wider than that because, to be able to impart and explain a concept, I have to become an expert in no time at all. And that's what I've always loved about working in journalism - you seriously do learn something new every day.
