Media Experience
Biographical Note
During my life-long career in journalism I have held many positions of responsibility. These range from a budding young branch office reporter/photographer to chief sub-editor of two of New Zealand's three national Sunday newspapers; deputy editor of a provincial daily newspaper; deputy group editor of the country's largest agricultural publisher; managing editor, magazines, of an Australian-owned industrial publishing group based in Auckland; and editor of NZ News UK in Britain and others in Fiji.
I have written for many of these and many other publications, plus undertaken PR work and other commissions, including book editing. I was a tutor at Auckland Institute (later University) of Technology in 1992, supervising two new journalism courses. I also undertook editing, design and production tutorials. Over the years I have trained and/or supervised dozens of young journalists.
I was New Zealand Press Association agent at The Daily News, New Plymouth, 1973-79, and an Australian Associated Press/Reuters correspondent while based at the Fiji Times in Suva, covering Fiji and neighbouring South Pacific nations and territories news for international media use from 1966-69.I covered much of the 1970 Fiji independence build-up and celebrations, and the chaos caused by notorious killer storm Hurricane Bebe with winds of nearly 290kmh in October 1972. It was a scary time. I like to think I’m a tad entrepreneurial, too. I have almost always operated a home-based or stand-alone business venture in addition to working fulltime as a journalist.
These include owning and editing at age 23 a monthly Fiji-based magazine in the South Pacific; running a 36-stall and shop market operation for which I was granted Taranaki province’s first Saturday shopping licence; rental properties; buying and selling antiques, collectibles and militaria; and property renovations. So I also understand the needs of business operators wanting the best value for money.
