Biographical Note
Ian Robinson is a New Zealand born traveler and a travel writer/photographer with lengthy trips throughout Latin America and Asia, as well as living in the UK and Japan. Adventure travel is his passion! In 1992 he crossed Outer Mongolia alone on horseback, one of the first westerners to do so. In 2004 he completed a similar journey across Tibet. Following these journeys Ian was made a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society. In 2008 Ian spent three months travelling independently in Afghanistan including riding alone into the remote Pamir region. Ian prides himself on being able to get to know a place and its people on an intimate level, to be able to experience and write about both well known popular tourist destinations as well as out of the way, even remote places, often discovering new opportunities for travel destinations. Ian has a unique ability to be able to write about the other side of often well known places, meeting quirky people in unusual settings. Ian writes with a clear, easy to read, economically descriptive style. He has researched, written and published seven books: Tea with the Taliban, travels in Afghanistan, an account of his 2008 journey through this troubled land, Waikato River, a biography of New Zealand’s greatest waterway. Hauraki Gulf, an in-depth depiction of this diverse and magnificent region. The Coromandel, a portrait of one of New Zealands most beautiful and fascinating regions on which he researched the Coromandels past and present. You Must Die Once, the biographical account of his horseback journey across Tibet, You Must Die Once was highly commended in the Travcom travel media awards in 2007. Gantsara, alone across Mongolia, the story of his epic Mongolian adventure.
