Biographical Note

Writer and editor George Russell has been resident in Asia since 1996 and is now based in Hong Kong. He combines contributions to consumer and trade media with work for multilateral institutions, foreign government agencies and non-government organizations. He writes principally about India and China, but also about South Asia, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

From 2005 to 2010, George lived in Bangalore, India, where he contributed to the World Economic Forum's publications and worked as a correspondent for the India Business Law Journal, China Business Law Journal, Asia IP and Managing Partner legal magazines, the Cathay Pacific Airways/Dragonair stable of publications and several trade and professional publications such as Qatar Petroleum’s World Petroleum Congress 2011 Newsletter. He continues to work for all these organizations from Hong Kong. 

He lived in Hanoi between 2000 and 2005, where, in addition to his work as a correspondent for Bloomberg News, he also acted as a consultant to the United Nations Development Programme, Association of South East Asian Nations, World Health Organization, Family Health International and the Population Council. He also wrote occasionally for The Wall Street Journal and South China Morning Post.

Previously, George lived in Indonesia where he was publications editor at the Centre for International Forestry Research. He was also a consultant to AusAID, the National Democratic Institute and International IDEA.

In 1998 he was appointed assistant editor of the Far Eastern Economic Review and later headed the prestigious weekly’s regional political coverage. He also edited The Correspondent, the magazine of the famous Foreign Correspondents' Club of Hong Kong. 

He launched The Gulf Today, a daily newspaper in the United Arab Emirates, in 1996 and was its first editor. 

From 1988 to 1996 George lived in the United States. He worked as an editor at the entertainment magazine Star before joining a new management team to revamp the legendary show business weekly Variety in New York. He served there as news editor and assistant managing editor. He also worked as an editor at the New York Post, the New York Daily News, the Cape Cod Times and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

Born in Melbourne, George began his career by writing news for The Australian. He left for his first overseas appointment in 1987, when he became features editor of the Hong Kong Standard.
