I’ve been working in publishing since 1983, when I took a job as an editorial assistant to magazines and newspapers in Santa Cruz County, California. Later employers included Metro Newspapers and Peninsula Community Newspapers in Santa Clara County. I earned a bachelor's degree in Politics at UC Santa Cruz in 1984, and a master's degree in Mass Communications in 1988 at San Jose State. For the next eight years, I worked full-time as a news and feature writer and frequent editor for Bay Area weeklies.

I trained as a copyeditor through UC Berkeley Extension and editcetera. In 2001, I founded icopyedit and began working as a freelance copyeditor and proofreader of nonfiction trade and text books.
